Leather grades, and what "genuine" really means

Leather is graded by which layer of the hide it comes from and how much its surface has been altered. Full-grain keeps the natural surface and is the strongest; top-grain is sanded and refinished; "genuine leather" is usually a lower-grade layer, and bonded leather is shredded scraps glued together. Tanning, mostly chrome or vegetable, then decides how the leather feels and ...

The leather strap, how it's made

A leather strap is a sandwich of layers: a top leather, often a padding or stiffening layer, and a lining that touches your skin. The pieces are cut with steel dies, thinned at the edges, glued and pressed, then stitched, edge-finished and punched. The quality of each step shows in how the strap looks, feels and ages.

Your Guide to Water-Friendly Leather Watch Straps

Your Guide to Water-Friendly Leather Watch Straps

When the rains arrive, most people assume it’s time to tuck their leather watch straps away and reach for something synthetic. But here’s the truth: not all leather fears water. In fact, premium, real-skin leather can handle a drizzle, and even a downpour, far better than you think. At HEllO, we use only high-quality, full-grain or top-grain leather that’s treated to endure ...

A good strap, how to spot one

Check the material grade, the edges, the stitching, the lining, the hardware and the fit. A good strap has a clearly named leather grade, smooth even edges, neat tight stitches, a soft natural lining, solid stainless steel hardware and exact sizing. Most of these can be judged in a minute, in hand or from close-up photos.

Strap care, material by material

Keep leather and suede dry and give them rest days; wash fabric by hand; rinse rubber after salt or chlorine; brush metal bracelets with warm soapy water. Store straps out of direct sun, and let any wet strap dry naturally, never on a heater or in a dryer. Ten minutes of care a month can double a strap's life.

WHY YOUR WATCH DESERVES A BETTER STRAP

WHY YOUR WATCH DESERVES A BETTER STRAP

Every detail counts when it comes to personal style, and for watch lovers, the strap is the ultimate finishing touch. You might have the perfect timepiece—a Rolex Submariner, an Omega Speedmaster, or a Seiko Diver—but if it’s paired with a generic strap, you’re missing an opportunity to truly make it your own. A watch is a masterpiece of engineering and design, but the strap...

Watch straps, the complete guide

Watch straps fall into five families: leather, fabric, rubber, metal bracelets and pass-through straps (like the NATO). Leather suits dress and everyday watches, fabric and pass-through straps suit field and casual wear, rubber suits sport and water, and bracelets suit almost anything. The right one depends on the watch's character, your day, and the climate you live in.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT STRAP FOR YOUR WATCH

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT STRAP FOR YOUR WATCH

Your watch strap can make or break your watch. A watch is no longer just a device to tell time; it’s a statement of who you are. When you choose a watch, you base your decision on your personality and how it makes you feel. However, while there are many options for watches, sadly, the same effort is not often put into watch straps by many brands. Even renowned names like Tis...

The WatchLife, hour by hour

Living the WatchLife means a watch is not something you check, it is something you live with. It decides how your morning starts, what your eyes go to when you meet someone, what you listen to on the drive, who you end up talking to at the airport and where you spend your Saturday. It is a hobby, a community and a way of paying attention to small, beautiful things, and once ...
