Lug width, and why 1 mm matters

Lug width is the gap between the inside faces of your watch's lugs, measured in millimetres. Your strap must be exactly that wide where it meets the case. Most men's watches use 18, 20 or 22 mm. Measure with a ruler or calipers, or check the maker's specifications.

Straight end, or curved end?

A straight-end strap has a flat, square end and fits almost any watch with the right lug width. A curved-end strap has its end shaped to follow the curve of one particular case, so it meets the watch with no gap. Straight ends are universal and easy to swap; curved ends look factory-fitted but only fit the model they're made for.

Spring bars, and quick-release pins

A spring bar is the small spring-loaded rod that holds a strap between the lugs. Its tips push into holes on the inside of each lug. A quick-release pin is a spring bar with a tiny lever, so you can pull the tip back with a fingernail and change the strap in seconds, without tools.

Watch straps, the complete guide

Watch straps fall into five families: leather, fabric, rubber, metal bracelets and pass-through straps (like the NATO). Leather suits dress and everyday watches, fabric and pass-through straps suit field and casual wear, rubber suits sport and water, and bracelets suit almost anything. The right one depends on the watch's character, your day, and the climate you live in.

Strap taper, explained

Taper is how much a strap narrows from the lugs to the buckle. It is written as two numbers, such as 20/18 mm: 20 mm at the watch, 18 mm at the buckle. A 2 mm taper is standard. More taper looks slimmer and dressier; little or no taper looks bolder and sportier.

Buckles and clasps, a field guide

A tang buckle is the classic pin-and-frame buckle that threads through the strap's holes. A deployant clasp is a hinged metal clasp that folds open and shut, so the strap stays fastened. A butterfly clasp is a symmetrical deployant that opens from the centre and almost disappears under the wrist. Tang buckles are simplest and lightest; clasps are more secure and save the str...

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT STRAP FOR YOUR WATCH

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT STRAP FOR YOUR WATCH

Your watch strap can make or break your watch. A watch is no longer just a device to tell time; it’s a statement of who you are. When you choose a watch, you base your decision on your personality and how it makes you feel. However, while there are many options for watches, sadly, the same effort is not often put into watch straps by many brands. Even renowned names like Tis...

A good strap, how to spot one

Check the material grade, the edges, the stitching, the lining, the hardware and the fit. A good strap has a clearly named leather grade, smooth even edges, neat tight stitches, a soft natural lining, solid stainless steel hardware and exact sizing. Most of these can be judged in a minute, in hand or from close-up photos.

Strap sizing, and micro-adjustment

Measure your wrist just above the wrist bone. A standard two-piece strap fits most wrists from about 16 to 20 cm (6.25–8 in). You should be able to slide one finger under the strap, and the watch should not slide over your wrist bone. Micro-adjustment holes or links let you fine-tune between the usual sizes.

The WatchLife, hour by hour

Living the WatchLife means a watch is not something you check, it is something you live with. It decides how your morning starts, what your eyes go to when you meet someone, what you listen to on the drive, who you end up talking to at the airport and where you spend your Saturday. It is a hobby, a community and a way of paying attention to small, beautiful things, and once ...
